First Sunday Lesson - September

Bishop wanted us to understand the importance of Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy so that was the focus of this month's first Sunday lesson.

The commandment is found in Exodus 20:8-11 and D&C 59:9. Please see the amazing BLESSINGS that come by keeping this commandment, especially in Leviticus 26:2-6, 9. With wickedness all around us, one of the greatest blessings of the Sabbath is that it provides a sanctuary for our families.

One of the keys to successfully living this commandment is to PLAN for it.  Prepare, work, exercise, shop, cook, clean and study on the other six days.

 Charles Didier said,
“To have a true, protected, spiritual Sabbath experience, why not plan a family Sabbath schedule and be prepared with activities that are in harmony with Sunday worship, asking ourselves how our activities will strengthen us spiritually and not only please the Lord but also make us happy and stronger in our relationship with the Lord.”

Worshiping the Lord and remembering His atoning sacrifice is central to our Sabbath observance.  Let's review our activities and select one or two things we can do to more fully keep the Sabbath holy.

First Sunday Lesson - August

On the 1st Sunday in August we talked about a few things that I, as your Relief Society President, felt strongly was what the Lord wants the sisters in our ward to work on. We had a wonderful lesson and we all taught each other and learned through the Spirit.

Here are the points we covered:

1. As Relief Society sisters, we need to STUDY OUR SCRIPTURES each and every day in order to increase our faith and personal righteousness.
     - Set aside a time (10-15 min. at least) and say a prayer before hand.
     - Go to the scriptures with a question and search for answers! (How can I handle all the pressures on me right  now? How can I grow in confidence and self-esteem? How   can  I have hope when life seems so bleak?
     - Keep a journal - write your question, your answers, references, words or phrases you liked, your thoughts and testimony, and more.

YOU WILL FIND THAT STUDYING THE SCRIPTURES WILL INVITE THE SPIRIT INTO YOUR LIFE AND WILL INVITE PERSONAL REVELATION!

"The ability to qualify for, receive, and act on personal revelation is the single most important skill that can be acquired in this life." (Sister Julie B. Beck)

2. I felt very strongly that the Lord wants each sister in our ward to READ THE WHOLE ENSIGN EACH MONTH! I know there are promised blessings awaiting you if you do! Answers will come right when you need them; talks will seem written just for you. Your knowledge of the gospel will increase, your faith and testimony will grow, and new ideas will come to you! Before you read other books or blogs, read for a few minutes from the Ensign. Commit to read the whole Ensign each month! You will begin to look forward to it and it will become a lifelong habit that will bless you and strengthen your marriage and family (September issue is all about marriage!).

 - IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN ENSIGN SUBSCRIPTION, TALK TO YOUR VISITING TEACHERS AND THEY WILL HELP YOU SUBSCRIBE! (You can also read online.)

3. As newly marrieds it is important to TALK WITH YOUR SPOUSE ABOUT BOUNDARIES. Once married, you should cleave unto your spouse and none else. Beware of your interactions with members of the opposite sex and don't ever say or do anything you wouldn't do with your spouse standing right there. Let the Spirit be your guide. Please be especially careful on social media sites like Facebook, and remember to be 100% loyal to your spouse - emotionally as well as physically. Decide what boundaries you will set (not driving alone with a member of the opposite sex, interactions with male/female friends, etc.)

4. President Runia invited us at our February Ward Conference to do him a favor and "Please protect your homes." Make your homes places where the Spirit can be. What kinds of books and movies are in your home, what pictures are on your walls? What comes in through media sources? Is your home orderly and clean? Try and make your home like the temple - but don't stress if you don't achieve perfection all at once!

I know that if will do these things, you will notice a significant difference in your life and a greater ability to be self reliant through whatever challenges life may throw at you. As a presidency we pray for you. We want to know what is going on in your lives. We want to help you increase your faith and personal righteousness, strengthen your home and family, and care for the poor and needy. :) I know that our Heavenly Father knows and loves you. You are His daughter. He has a plan for you. These things, if followed, will help you draw closer to Him.

Be Positive

President Spencer W. Kimball once said: “I remind you … that regardless of your present age, you are building your life; … it can be full of joy and happiness, or it can be full of misery. It all depends upon you and your attitudes, for your altitude, or the height you climb, is dependent upon your attitude or your response to situations”
(in Conference Report, Oct. 1974, 112–13; or Ensign, Nov. 1974, 80).

10 Day Beauty Challenge

For those of you sisters who were not at the RS activity on Wednesday night, here is the
10 Day Beauty Challenge!

Day One
THE CHALLENGE: GET STARTED
Today, start your journal for the challenge. Write for at least ten minutes and express gratitude for all the things your body allows you to do. Continue to write for at least 10 minutes each day through the challenge. Refrain from weighing yourself today. In fact, refrain from weighing yourself during the 10 days of the challenge.
WHY: Recording your thoughts helps you process your feelings. You will be surprised what surfaces when you give time and voice to your thoughts. When we focus on weight, the number never seems to be the right one. We don’t have to subject ourselves to that grief—weight is not always an accurate measure of health or body fat, and we would do well to eliminate the obsession of weighing ourselves altogether.

Day Two
THE CHALLENGE: GOD’S DEFINITION OF BEAUTY
Study what beauty is from a gospel perspective. Start by reading “True Beauty” by Lynn G. Roberts (see lds.org) and 1 Samuel 16:7 and 1 Corinthians 3:16.
WHY: God is our Heavenly Father, and He knows us better than anyone--He created us! He knows most intimitately how beautiful we are, and He will tell us if we seek Him. A relationship with Heavenly Father is essential if we are to truly understand beauty and our worth.
Journal: From your study, how do you think Heavenly Father defines beauty? Why might this be hard to internalize and believe?

Day Three
THE CHALLENGE: 10 POSITIVE THINGS
Make a list of 10 positive things you like about yourself that have nothing to do with your appearance--and 10 positive things you like about your appearance.
WHY: Your perception of yourself includes the physical. We won’t pretend it’s not important--physical factors are part of the mortal world we live in. We’ve challenged you to make two lists because both your inner and outer beauty affect you--and there will be times you feel insecure about both. Refer back to your lists and remember the positive.
Journal: Was it easier to come up with things you like about yourself or things about your appearance?

Day Four
THE CHALLENGE: GET READY ON THE INSIDE
How much time do you spend getting ready each day? Today, use that same amount of time to get ready on the inside. Meditate, write in your journal, or perform an act of service.
WHY: Women spend thousands of hours on their appearances over a lifetime. Think about what you could accomplish if you spent the same amount of time each day preparing your inner self. How would you be different? How would each day be different?
Journal: Did you notice a difference in how you felt throughout the day? Explore why or why not.

Day Five
THE CHALLENGE: EXERCISE FOR FUN
Exercise for fun—choose a form of exercise that you enjoy, a form you wouldn’t normally choose because it calls attention to your body.
WHY: Exercise is necessary for health, but we have turned it into a duty, obligation and punishment--something we do to “make up” for the food we eat. Women are bombarded with media messages that tell us we can’t run, swim, do yoga, or any number of things unless we have the “perfect” body. We must stop waiting to achieve perfection and live our lives to the fullest—taking risks, trying new things, and utilizing the unlimited potential of our bodies.
Journal: How did your body feel during and after your exercise? Reflect on the blessing of being able to move.

Day Six

THE CHALLENGE: NO FAT TALK
Refrain from talk about weight or shape of self and others. Be aware of how often you compare yourself to others, and evaluate how this makes you feel.
WHY: The obsession with weight, shape and appearance continues among women partially because we encourage it in each other. We have made it unacceptable for a woman to be at peace with her body. Refraining from speaking about weight and shape—positively or negatively--allows us to focus on a person’s real value and worth.
Journal: How difficult was it to avoid fat talk?

Day Seven
THE CHALLENGE: TUNE OUT THE MEDIA
Tune out media – no TV, movies, magazines or internet surfing. Instead tune in to nature. Notice a sunset, gaze at the stars, sit by a stream and listen to the water.
WHY: The media constantly barrages us with unrealistic and unhealthy ideals of beauty. Because we are incessantly bombarded, it is impossible to remain unaffected. Get in touch with who you are independent of these messages and find your center in things that are real and lasting--your personality, nature, and your relationships.
Journal: What did you tune into when you tuned out the media?

Day Eight
THE CHALLENGE: SELF-TALK
Pay attention to your thoughts today. Ask yourself, How do my thoughts make me feel? Is what I’m thinking really true? Practice challenging your negative thoughts and replacing them with more truthful ones.
WHY: Our thoughts determine how we feel and act. If we talked to others the way we talk to ourselves, we would be ashamed. The beauty of being human is that we can control our thoughts. Start by recognizing your thoughts, challenging them, and replacing them.
Journal: What was your experience today? Write for at least 10 minutes.

Day Nine
THE CHALLENGE: BODY KINDNESS
Be kind to your body today. Take a nap, go for a walk, enroll in a yoga class, get a massage, take a bubble bath, get a pedicure or manicure, or cook yourself a delicious meal.
WHY: We have been trained to hate our bodies. We pluck, tweeze, shape, mold, sculpt, and otherwise try to change our appearances. Your body is the vehicle that will carry you to your dreams--treat it with kindness and love. We must cherish our bodies as God-given gifts.
Journal: What did you do for your body today? How did it make your body feel?

Day Ten
THE CHALLENGE: COMMIT
Commit to yourself that you will try your very best to be more grateful and appreciative of your body. Learn to love yourself for all that you are. Live your life to the fullest and enjoy each day that you are blessed with.

And always remember…
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

Presidency 1st Sunday Lesson -- Temple Attendance

Elder Bednar shared the following experience in the April 2009 General Conference:
Shortly after I was called to serve as a stake president in 1987, I talked with a good friend who recently had been released as a stake president. During our conversation I asked him what he would teach me about becoming an effective stake president. His answer to my question had a profound impact upon my subsequent service and ministry. My friend indicated he had been called to serve as a temple worker soon after his release. He then said: “I wish I had been a temple worker before I was a stake president. If I had served in the temple before my call to serve as a stake president, I would have been a very different stake president.”

I was intrigued by his answer and asked him to explain further. He responded: “I believe I was a good stake president. The programs in our stake ran well, and our statistics were above average. But serving in the temple has expanded my vision. If I were called today to serve as a stake president, my primary focus would be on worthiness to receive and honor temple covenants. I would strive to make temple preparation the center of all that we did. I would do a better job of shepherding the Saints to the house of the Lord.”

That brief conversation with my friend helped me as a stake president to teach relentlessly about and testify of the eternal importance of temple ordinances, temple covenants, and temple worship. The deepest desire of our presidency was for every member of the stake to receive the blessings of the temple, to be worthy of and to use frequently a temple recommend.

Sisters, it is of eternal importance to attend the temple regularly.

In Relief Society, we had a discussion of the following questions. Whether or not you were there, take some time to answer these questions for yourself.
1. Why do Latter-day Saints go to the temple?
2. What inhibits you personally from going to the temple? If you do go regularly, what may be lacking in your personal temple worship?
3. How can you overcome these obstacles (from question 2)?

President Monson talked about going to the temple in his most recent conference address:
"If you have been to the temple for yourselves and if you live within relatively close proximity to a temple, your sacrifice could be setting aside the time in your busy lives to visit the temple regularly."

Here's a challenge: If you haven’t been going regularly, go. Go with your husband, grab another sister or go by yourself. Do initiatories, sealings or an endowment session. Choose one of your obstacles and overcome it. If you have been going regularly, continue to do so. Try to get more out of the experience. As you strive to attend the temple regularly, the Lord will bless you and your family.

Visiting Teaching Workshop

Last Tuesday we had a Relief Society activity all about Visiting Teaching and it was awesome! For those who could not make it, here are some notes/thoughts from it!

What is the Purpose of Visiting Teaching?
Visiting teaching gives women the opportunity to watch over, strengthen, and teach one another. Through visiting teaching, the Relief Society president helps the bishop identify and resolve short-term and long-term needs of sisters and their families. (Church Handbook 9.5)

What are the Responsibilities of Visiting Teachers?
Visiting teachers sincerely come to know and love each sister, help her strengthen her faith, and give service. They seek personal inspiration to know how to respond to the spiritual and temporal needs of each sister they are assigned to visit.
Taking into account each sister’s individual needs and circumstances, visiting teachers have regular contact (monthly if possible) with those they are assigned. When a personal visit is not possible, visiting teachers may use phone calls, letters, e-mail, or other means to watch over and strengthen sisters.
When appropriate, visiting teachers share a gospel message. These messages may be from the monthly visiting teaching message printed in the Ensign or Liahona magazine and the scriptures.
Visiting teachers give compassionate service during times of illness, death, and other special circumstances. They assist the Relief Society president in coordinating short-term and long-term assistance when invited. (Church Handbook 9.5.1)

THE REPORT
How Do I Report Visiting Teaching?
*The Relief Society presidency or those who are called to assist them receive monthly reports from visiting teachers. The visiting teachers report any special needs of the sisters they visit and any service rendered. In addition, presidency members meet with visiting teachers regularly to discuss sisters’ spiritual and temporal welfare and to make plans to help those in need. Confidential information should be reported only to the Relief Society president, who reports it to the bishop.
The Relief Society president gives the bishop a monthly visiting teaching report. Each report includes a list of those who were not contacted. If a sister and her family have urgent needs, the Relief Society president reports this information to the bishop immediately. (Church Handbook 9.5.4)

*Bishop Mower has asked us to answer the following three questions in our reports:
*Was there any service rendered?
*Did you notice any needs?
*Were you able to visit and share a message?

Sisters are welcome to share more information then the three questions and are asked to bring all confidential matters to the Relief Society President, April Jacob. Bishop would also like us to be discerning about possible financial needs in the ward.

THE MESSAGE
How do I prepare a message?
*Adjust the message to your sisters needs, as you get to know her.
*Try a teaching method the Savior used. The following are some ways teachers can emulate the Savior’s methods in their teaching:
1 Pray. The Savior prayed for those who would hear His words (see 3 Nephi 19:27–29 ). When you pray for those you teach, you exercise faith that God will soften their hearts. In your prayers, express your love for God and for those you are teaching.
2 Use the scriptures. Jesus Christ taught from the scriptures (see Luke 24:27 ). Using the scriptures invites the Holy Ghost into your teaching.
3 Bear testimony. Jesus testified of Heavenly Father and of His own divine role (see John 10:17–18, 27–30 ). A testimony is a simple, direct declaration of belief; it is a feeling or an assurance. As you share your testimony of the gospel principles you teach, the Spirit will witness of their truthfulness.
4 Use music. Jesus and His Apostles “sung an hymn” ( Matthew 26:30 ). Through music, you and those you teach can invite the influence of the Holy Ghost and express feelings that may be hard to express in other ways.
5 Share stories and examples. Jesus taught gospel principles with stories, such as those about the good Samaritan (see Luke 10:25–37 ) and the prodigal son (see Luke 15:11–32 ). Use true stories to show how principles of the restored gospel apply in daily life.
6 Use objects and pictures. Jesus used common objects and comparisons to teach gospel principles, such as a mustard seed (see Matthew 17:20 ) and calling His Apostles to be “fishers of men” (see Matthew 4:18–22 ). Pictures can also help strengthen others’ understanding of scripture accounts and gospel principles.
7 Ask questions, and listen. Jesus asked questions, such as, “Whom say ye that I am?” ( Matthew 16:15 ) and “What is written in the law? how readest thou?” ( Luke 10:26 ), and listened to the responses. Thoughtful questions encourage discussion and the appropriate sharing of personal experiences from investigators. When you listen, you show love for your investigators and the Spirit can help direct your conversation.

*Remember listening to your sister is also ministering and a big part of the message.

THE VISIT
The following are ways to give service. I need someone to watch my kids while I run to the grocery store. I am baking cookies and I need one cup of sugar. I am going crazy and I need to talk to an adult. I want to go to the temple, but I don’t want to go alone. I would like to go for a jog with someone. I need a ride. I had a bad day and would like a hug. My kids and I have lots of energy, we would like a play-date. I would like to get out of the house and go on a walk with my Visiting Teacher. My husband is gone and I need someone to sit by at church. I would like to learn a new skill that my Visiting Teacher is talented at.

Visiting Teaching Fruit Dip Recipe

Are You Ready to Be a Mother? Joke Test

Mess Test: Smear peanut butter on the sofa and curtains. Now rub your hands in the wet flower bed and then rub
on the walls. Cover the stains with crayon. Place a fish stick behind the couch and leave it there all summer.

Toy Test:
Obtain a 55-gallon drum of LEGOs® (if LEGOs are not available, you may substitute roofing tacks). Have
a friend spread them all over the house. Put on a blindfold. Try to walk to the bathroom or kitchen. If you step on
one do not scream – this could wake a child at night.

Grocery Store Test:
Borrow one or two small animals (goats are best) and take them with you as you shop at the
grocery store. Always keep them in sight and pay for anything they eat or damage.

Feeding Test:
Obtain a large plastic milk jug. Fill halfway with water. Suspend from the ceiling with a stout cord.
Start the jug swinging. Try to insert spoonfuls of soggy cereal (such as Fruit Loops or Cheerios) into the mouth of
the jug, while pretending to be an airplane. Now dump the contents of the jug on the floor.

Night Test:
Prepare by obtaining a small cloth bag and fill it with eight to 12 pounds of sand. Soak it thoroughly
in water. At 8pm begin to waltz and hum with the bag until 9pm. Lay down your bag and set your alarm for 10pm.
Get up, pick up your bag, and sing every song you have ever heard. Make up about a dozen more and sing these
until 4am. Set alarm for 5am. Get up and make breakfast. Keep this up for five years. Look cheerful.

Final Assignment:
Find a couple who already have a small child. Lecture them on how they can improve their
discipline, patience, tolerance, toilet training, and child’s table manners. Emphasize to them that they should
never allow their children to run wild. Enjoy this experience. It will be the last time you will have all the answers.

Moving Out Procedures

Since so many of us are moving out, we just wanted to make everyone aware of how the moving out procedures should work. We really want to utilize the visiting teaching system.

If you are moving out and you need help cleaning, please let your visiting teachers know. (Also note, as a visiting teacher, please make your best efforts to be available if the sister you visit needs help!) If your visiting teachers cannot help you, then they should try their best to find someone else to help out. Also, if you know of the SPECIFIC time you are going to be cleaning, you can email us back and we can let all the sisters in the ward know. Then, whoever is available at that time and wants to help can! You can also let your visiting teachers know if you need help babysitting while you clean or pack if you prefer that instead.

For help moving out, the Elders Quorum should be sending a similar email to all the brethren in the ward and it will kind of work the same as this procedure, except with home teachers instead.

If you have any questions, please email the Relief Society Presidency back and we will do our best to help you out. We hope that everyone who is taking finals is doing well and that those who are moving get the help they need! We are all busy, but we can all help each other.

Thanks,
The Relief Society Presidency

A Good Woman

"A good woman knows that she does not have enough time, energy, or opportunity to take care of all of the people or do all of the worthy things her heart yearns to do. Life is not calm for most women, and each day seems to require the accomplishment of a million things, most of which are important. A good woman must constantly resist alluring and deceptive messages from many sources telling her that she is entitled to more time away from her responsibilities and that she deserves a life of greater ease and independence. But with personal revelation, she can prioritize correctly and navigate this life confidently."
- Sister Beck

Let There Be Light: Creating Spirit-Filled Homes

I sometimes worry about the increasing wickedness of the world, and the challenges my children will have to face.  I know many of you do as well.  I also know that we are not alone in our concerns.  Review the 2010 General Conference talks and it becomes evident that the Brethren are choosing to focus on teaching and strengthening the rising generation.  Some of their recent addresses include:

“Mothers and Daughters” by Elder Ballard
“Help Them on Their Way Home” by President Eyring
“Mothers Teaching Children in the Home” by Elder Perry
“Watching With All Perseverance” by Elder Bednar
Our Duty to God: The Mission of Parents and Leaders to the Rising Generation” by Elder Hales
“Tell Me the Stories of Jesus” by Elder Andersen
“Let There Be Light!” by Elder Cook

Consider these words from Elder Cook’s talk:

“The assault on moral principles has never been stronger…An ever-present danger to the family is the onslaught of evil forces that seem to come from every direction…If we do not black out evil from our homes and lives, do not be surprised if devastating moral explosions shatter the peace which is the reward for righteous living.”

That sounds pretty grim, doesn’t it?  However, Elder Cook goes on to promise, “If we make our homes holy places that shelter us from evil, we will be protected from the adverse consequences that the scriptures have foretold.”

So how do we black out evil and make our homes holy places?  By filling our homes with the Spirit.  And how do we do that?  In a lot of ways.  Here are a few ways that I think are especially helpful in not only bringing the spirit into our homes, but maintaining that spirit from day to day:

1.       Daily family scripture study, twice daily family prayer, and weekly family home evening.
There are as many different ways to implement these practices as there are families.  We talk about them all the time, but that is because these three habits are essential to having the spirit reside in the home.

2.      Frequent expressions of love and acts of service.  Serving others helps us to feel the spirit.  This seems especially true in the home, when we are serving those we love the most.

3.      Uplifting music and other media.  It’s amazing how quickly a little mo-tab or a video from the “Mormon Messages” YouTube channel will dissolve contention and bring the spirit.

4.      Cleanliness and Order.  I know that this can be a touchy subject.  We’re busy and it’s hard to always keep the house clean, especially in small apartments without much storage.  Add to this equation a couple of children and the task may seem insurmountable.  However, Heavenly Father’s house is a house of order, and I believe that He desires our homes to be orderly as well.  This is not to say that our houses need to always be perfectly clean.  Sometimes there are dishes in the sink, laundry that needs folded, and trash that needs taken out.  But we should do our best to create a home of cleanliness and order.  Doing so will help create an environment where the spirit of the Lord can dwell.

There are many other ways that we can help invite the spirit into our home and make them holy places that are a haven from the evil raging in the world today.  I know that if we listen carefully to the messages that will be given at the upcoming general conference, the Lord will inspire us to know what we can do in our homes to teach and strengthen our children against the challenges and temptations they will face.
